Default Whats the best alternative to a TB-303?

    Hey everyone,

I've been tossing up whether to get a hardware box instead of using the usual assortment of VST emulations to produce TB-303 type sounds I'm using at the mo'...

There seem to be heaps out there and I've had a muck around on a Future Retro which was good but no where near as good as the original...

(If I told you I HAD an original TB-303 in 1999 BUT SOLD IT - to pay for drugs, party's and rent at the time.... you would probably hate me... ahh misspent youth... so just forget I ever told you eh?)

Anyone tried that x0b0x thing? Is it worth taking the time to build?

Anyone else got anything else in their studios they use?

    Cheers guys!

ive played on the xObOx and its quality, me i would just buy it instead of buying the one to build

I own the acid lab bassline 2 - again quality machine

cant compare to the 303 cause ive never used one but i would go for the xObOx if I was you

    This?

It's not a TB-303 clone, although it came with some similar sounds. It was more of a synth/sequencer/drum machine combo box.

Not if you want it to sound like a TB-303.
In it's own right, it's not a bad piece of kit though.

I used to have a MC09.. Phraselab - Was great fun.. Had all the 303 sounds in it. I'm sure purists would have a heart attack over it, but if you find one 2nd hand, pick it up.

I got mine for €50. Sold it on to pay for something else. Great fun. Lots of control.. but obviously not the real thing.

It seems to me that there were some midi issues with it. I don't think the knobs transmit data. Or maybe it was just that the internal sequencer wouldn't record them?

I could be totally wrong on this as I haven't actually played on one since 1997, but I'd look into it if I were you.

heard really great things about the x0x0x boxes.

my old Future Retro 777 stood up great along side my old 303, added a lot of extra flavour too. i'm sure you can find them floating around ebay but i think the 777's now go for more than the x0x0x's since they're out of production.

    good luck.

i use vsti's - the audio bass line and the phocyon and with some vst's you can get kinda close (ish) i have used the xoxox it was great. gutted that you sold your 303 that must still hurt.
As for the MC303 - i got one cos its cheap and in my opinion the drum samples in it are f'in amazing. if i need a nice deep kick i go straight for it.

    Cheap MFB-SYNTH LITE II
Not cheap DSI Evolver. Buy one if you can mate it will make you cream for ever more. Sorry to dig up an old post but I think its important you see these synths.

I think there is no doubt about the best alternative to a real 303 is a x0xb0x, the sound, sequencer, and all things in a x0x are truely oriented to be a clone.
There is also good acid machines, maybe sounding like a real 303, but haven't the taste, philosophy... of the 303
